Amorgos, the island where was filmed the movie “Big Blue“ with the famous turquoise waters and the wild beauty, situated in the southeastern part of the Cyclades, southeast of Naxos, northwest of Astypalaia and is 136 nautical miles from the port of Piraeus . Its surface is estimated to be 116.96 square kilometers and has a coastline of 112 kilometers. It has an elongated shape. Its length reaches 33 km and the average width reach 2 km. The territory is mountainous, the highest peak Krikelo which is located at the northeastern end of the island and reaches 780 meters.

History

Amorgos mentioned with the names Yperia, Patagi or Platagi, Pangali and Psychia, Karkisia. The names of the three cities that gives Stephanos Byzantios Arkesini, Minoa, Egiali or Melanie is the most accurate. Judging from the excavations and findings, the presence of Amorgos was important in prehistoric times, particularly in the first period of the Cycladic civilization (3200-2000 BC). A key role for the development of that time played the low distance from the Milo which was an important center of mining obsidian.
During the Byzantine period, Amorgos not flourish. The monastery Chozoviotissa (11th-12th century) or the diamond of Amorgos as many locals call it is the most important work to show from that era. The dominant tradition says was built by Alexios Komnenos the first.

Chora of Amorgos

It is worth visiting the elementary school, first established in Greece, the archaeological museum (Tower of Gavras), the Castle for its stunning views and the magnificent monastery Hozoviotissa which extends 250 meters from the sea built on cliffs .

Very close to Town, 3 km away is the famous beach of Agia Anna (the place where the movie “The Grand Blue“ filmed, which is below the monastery Chozoviotissa and pebble, pebbles and crystal clear waters and breathtaking.

Katapola

Katapola one of the two ports of Amorgos is 5 km from Chora of Amorgos island and is located in the center of the island.Its worhwhile to pay a visit to the church Katapoliani, historic archaeological site Minoa and walk to the picturesque cove of Katapola.

Aegiali

Aegiali is a set consisting of settlements:
Ormos, Aigiali -the second port of Amorgos (distance 14 km from Chora)
The village Lagkada situated in the valley of Aegiali
The Village Tholaria is near the ruins of the ancient city of Aegiali
It’s worth a visit to Aigiali for its sandy beaches, for the big island Nikouria and for despotic and quaint villages.
WHAT IT’S WORTH TO VISIT

Kato Meria

The Kato Meria consists of 3 villages Vroutsi, Arkesini and Kolofana.
The village of Arkesini is located 15 km from Chora with houses built on a mountainside (called Korakas).
A visit to the ancient city of Arkesini (Kastri) for the ancient tower of Holy Trinity who is saved from the 4 century BC is something to consider. But also you should visit the sinking of the “Olympia“ in Kalotaritissa.
Noteworthy is the Gramvoussa island opposite to Kalotaritissa beach for its turquoise clear waters and large, filled with sand and pebble beaches.
